Mail and Calendar Review

While Outlook is a staple in the business world, Microsoft has long understood that it is excessive for many home users, so there is a light email client built into Windows. A long time ago, this client was Outlook Express, but since then it has evolved and in the latest version of the desktop operating system, it is known as Mail and Calendar. For any Windows user, the email client is an obvious choice, since when you log into Windows 10 with a Hotmail, Live or Outlook.com address, the account gets added automatically. It works with other popular accounts, including Yahoo, Gmail and iCloud. It has a useful function known as Quick Actions which allows the user to easily mark or archive a message.

As a home user I find Mail and Calendar just fine for a basic application. It retrieves most mail clients and does add a spam filter which is hit or miss on its effectiveness. I’ve gone back and forth using this combo or simply using Outlook.com. In my experience the Mail app doesn’t always sync well so if I go from one PC to another using Mail app I start seeing mail tagged as not read even though I did read it. Sometimes, even mail I deleted still shows up at times because syncing is slow to catch up. What eventually ends up being confusing is that when you use a different mail app on say a mobile device you end up with sort of a mess. Since Microsoft does offer a free Outlook app for mobile why don’t they offer this app through the store for Windows? I suppose maybe using Android app access you may be able to download the Outlook app and use that? Microsoft seems to miss the point of having one mail app for all devices which is really too bad.

If you want to use yahoo mail because you have things setup such as lost password resource you have difficulty installing it in windows 11. You can install it through the mail and calendar app on windows 11. This brings up a version of yahoo that is different than the one I had used before which i was able to install directly as a program on previous computers. The mail problem I have found is that the spam filter which is displayed prominently on the real yahoo mail does not appear on the mail and calendar app version. The ban this sender option, which is somewhat hidden on the real yahoo, is also not to be found, al least by me, on the mail version. When you search for how to find spam filter in mail and calendar app you are told to go to settings and then select an option that does not appear on my settings menu. Right clicking on message does not help find spam. Outlook claims to have an easy to find spam filter, but nothing like what outlook describes apon my mail version of yahoo. There is a hamburger three dot icon on my mail version of yahoo, but it only contains a hidden move icon, nothing about spam.
It seems apparent that a spam filter should be visible and easy to find, but I can not find it on the mail and calendar app version of yahoo so I would rate that as unsatisfactory.
I was able by diligent searching to find a way to install yahoo mail on windows 11 by using the run feature in the start menu and a secret command which I can no longer find. This puts the real version of yahoo mail on my desktop icons and I can get to it that way.
I have found the mail and calendar app to work ok with yahoo mail in other respects. The send, delete, move and archive functions can be found even if in different places than I am used to. The screen has the functions on it in easy to find places for the most part, but sometimes goes away and shows a picture of a mountain which does no good and haides the function icons. Waste of time, but it generally does away if you click on a message.
If you are going to require a seperate mail app to bring in yahoo, why not bring in the real yahoo, not a screwed up version of it.
I also use G mail through this product and that works fine. It brings in the G mail I am used to.

  3. This is crap. Interface is clumsey. You can’ t block emails.
It is slow to update new emails. Deleted emails from latest update don’t migrate. Wastes half the screen with unwanted picture, makes email hard to read. If I want
a cramped email program with few useful features,
I will use my phone. This isn’t a quarter of the Live mail that Microsoft deleted with all my folders.
