TightVNC Review

TightVNC is a free remote control software derived from the famous VNC software. With this program you can view the desktop of a remote computer and control it with mouse and keyboard locally, just as if you were sitting in front of that computer. Ideal solution to make changes and install updates at any time and in any place just with an internet connection. The only necessary thing to do is to set a password that will have to be entered when connecting to a remote machine.

TIGHTVNC – TUTORIAL

This video tutorial shows how this software connects to a remote computer and gives an overview of the application features:

TIGHTVNC – FEATURES

  • Local cursor movement: the cursor movements no longer generate updates on the screen, but the movements of the remote cursor are processed locally by the viewer
  • Efficient compression algorithms: supports all VNC encoding standards, so that you can work efficiently. With TightVNC you can work remotely in near realtime in multiple network environments
  • Configurable compression levels: you can choose compression ratios and encoding speed, depending on the connection speed and the processor mounted
  • Optional JPEG compression: if image quality is not essential, you can use JPEG compression which will compress the color-rich screen area much more efficiently
  • Improvement of web access via browser: TightVNC includes a heavily implemented Java viewer with full support for Tight encoding, the local cursor feature, 24-bit color mode. The viewer Java applet can be accessed via the built-in HTTP server as in the VNC standard
  • Support for 2 passwords: the server allows or forbids remote mouse and keyboard events based on the permission level attributed to a certain password used for authentication
  • Advanced dialog properties in WinVCN: unlike the VNC standard, TightVNC offers the possibility to set a number for advanced settings directly from the WinVNC GUI and therefore to immediately apply the changes. There is no need to launch to set the query options, the connection priority, to allow loopback connections, disable the HTTP server etc …
  • Flexible configuration options: unlike the VNC standard, TightVNC allows you to arbitrarily choose the port numbers for TCP / IP connections, in addition to showing the (port) numbers that are traditionally used in VNC
  • Automatic SSH tunneling for Unix: the Unix version of the TightVNC viewer can make connections via SSH automatically using the installation of an SSH / OpenSSH client.

Conclusion

TightVNC is a remote control software that includes improved features from the original version of VNC. Very easy to use, stable and regularly updated, it’s free and compatible with Linux and Windows operating systems.
